It takes a special kind of low to target children in their schools. For two days this week, criminals have done just that across the Greater Toronto Area.
Escalating Threats Across the Region
Two days after Toronto experienced a wave of bomb threats, Halton Region is now responding to similar anonymous calls that have frightened students, parents, and faculty. The total number of schools affected has reached 25 across the GTA.
On Tuesday, Toronto police dealt with threats at 16 schools. On Thursday, Halton police faced threats at nine schools in Oakville. So far, no arrests have been made, but authorities are actively investigating.
Halton Police Response
Halton police deployed officers and safety equipment to the threatened schools. The affected institutions include Oakville Trafalgar HS, Iroquois Ridge HS, Abby Park HS, White Oaks HS, Garth Webb SS, Appleby College, Holy Trinity HS, Loyola HS, and St. Thomas Aquinas HS.
Police conducted thorough searches of all affected schools. In a news release, they stated, "No devices or credible evidence was located to suggest a threat to the safety of faculty, students or the public. Schools have resumed normal operations."
Halton Chief Steve Tanner confirmed that the schools have been cleared and are back to normal daily operations. However, the investigation remains ongoing.
Coordination with Toronto Police
Halton police are working with Toronto police on the investigative side, as the threats may be linked. The question remains: who is behind these threats and why? Police are exploring whether the same individual or group is responsible.
Community Concerns
While no injuries have been reported, the threats have caused significant disruption and fear. In Toronto on May 6, Bruce Jr. Public School and St. Augustine Seminary were evacuated as a precaution. Peel Regional Police are also investigating a separate case of graffiti vandalism at Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School last month.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Halton Police 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216. The story continues to develop.
