A woman is recovering in hospital after a late-night shooting in the heart of downtown Toronto, an incident that has prompted a police search for the gunman.
Shooting Near Queen and Church
The violent event unfolded on Thursday night around 10 p.m. in the area of Mutual Street and Queen Street East, situated between Church and Jarvis streets. Upon arrival, Toronto Police officers discovered a woman in her 30s suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency services quickly transported the victim to a nearby hospital. While she sustained serious injuries, medical officials have confirmed they are non-life-threatening.
Police Search for Suspect
Authorities have released a description of the individual they believe is responsible. The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 5-foot-6 with a skinny build. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, a grey sweater with the hood up, black pants, and black shoes.
Investigators noted that the gunman possibly fled the scene in a vehicle, though no description of the car was available. Toronto Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling 416-808-2222 or contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Ajax Man Charged in Separate Armed Robbery
In a separate incident in Durham Region, an Ajax man who was already out on bail for a prior offence has been arrested in connection with a new armed robbery.
Durham Regional Police were called to a convenience store in the area of Harwood Avenue South and Station Street on Wednesday around 8:50 p.m. The report indicated that a man had entered the store, brandished a knife toward an employee, and stole a quantity of items before fleeing. No physical injuries were reported.
Officers located the suspect a short distance away and took 26-year-old Leroy Marufu into custody without incident.
Marufu now faces a series of charges, including:
- Robbery with an offensive weapon
- Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
- Three counts of failing to comply with a probation order
- Failing to comply with a release order
- Possession of a Schedule I substance (crystal methamphetamine)
He was held for a bail hearing. Police are asking anyone with information on this case to contact the Robbery Unit.
