Marco Carducci Returns to Calgary to Warm Welcome, but Cavalry FC Prevails 2-0
Marco Carducci Returns to Calgary, Cavalry Wins 2-0

Calgary soccer fans gave Marco Carducci a heartfelt welcome on Saturday as the former Cavalry FC goalkeeper returned to Spruce Meadows for the first time since his offseason move to the Halifax Wanderers. The 29-year-old was greeted with warm applause and serenades from the crowd of 4,106 at ATCO Field, but it was Cavalry who had the last laugh, securing a 2-0 victory in Canadian Premier League action.

A Homecoming with Mixed Emotions

Carducci, who spent several seasons with Cavalry and served as captain, admitted the experience was emotional. "First and foremost, I would say it was a wonderful experience," he said. "Honestly, arriving here is the first time I've been back in Calgary since I moved. Calgary is my home, so it felt good to be back home to see friends, family and supporters."

The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with hugs exchanged between Carducci and former teammates and staff. However, the competitive spirit soon took over as Cavalry relentlessly attacked the Halifax goal. The Foot Soldiers Supporters Group, known for their passionate backing of Cavalry, even directed some playful jeers at their former hero.

Playful Banter from the Foot Soldiers

Carducci took the ribbing in stride. "It's fair — it's all fair," he said with a smile. "I have nothing but respect for the supporters here. I got a quite warm welcome early on. During the game, I expected a little bit of mind games from the Foot Soldiers, because I would have expected no less. So that was fun and a bit different."

The Match Decided in the Second Half

After a scoreless first half, Cavalry broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Goteh Ntignee blasted a right-footed shot from the top of the box after a corner kick. The goal came off a deflection that left Carducci with no chance. Eleven minutes later, Daan Klomp tapped in a goal following a dazzling dribbling display by young Adam Pearlman, sealing the 2-0 win.

Carducci acknowledged the difficulty of the match. "Ultimately, my job was to do the best I could for my team, and we came up a bit short, which is obviously frustrating," he said. "It's a loss, and we knew it was going to be a big challenge. But, of course, it felt like it had a little extra element for me."

Clean Sheet for Cavalry's New Goalkeeper

While Carducci was the focus of attention, Cavalry's new goalkeeper Nathan Ingham quietly recorded his fourth clean sheet in eight appearances for the club. Ingham, who replaced Carducci as the starting goalkeeper, has been a key contributor to Cavalry's strong defensive record this season.

The result leaves Cavalry in a strong position in the CPL standings, while Halifax continues to search for consistency. For Carducci, the return to Calgary was a memorable experience, even if the result did not go his way.
