A prolonged series of vehicle break-ins that plagued a Windsor neighborhood for over a month has finally come to an end, thanks to the vigilant actions of a local resident who confronted the alleged perpetrator in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Month-Long Crime Spree Targeted Fontainebleau Area
According to Windsor Police Service officials, the suspect was responsible for a rash of break-ins targeting multiple vehicles in the Fontainebleau area between February 21 and March 26. The criminal activity resulted in significant property damage and theft of personal belongings from the affected vehicles.
Police investigation revealed that in two separate instances, the individual attempted to sell stolen property through an online resale platform, demonstrating a calculated approach to profiting from the crimes.
Early Morning Confrontation Leads to Arrest
The breakthrough in the case occurred just before 4 a.m. on Thursday when a homeowner in the 2700 block of Armstrong Avenue witnessed a man removing items from their vehicle. The resident immediately confronted the suspect, who then fled the scene on foot in an attempt to escape.
Fortunately, members of the Windsor Police Target Base Unit were conducting surveillance operations in the vicinity at that exact moment. Officers quickly tracked down the fleeing suspect and made an arrest a short distance from the crime scene.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Suspect
Following the arrest, police investigators were able to connect the 31-year-old man to several other theft incidents that had occurred in the Fontainebleau neighborhood. The suspect now faces charges related to five separate criminal incidents.
The specific charges include:
- Four counts of theft under $5,000
- Four counts of possession of property obtained by crime
- One count of mischief under $5,000
Police have confirmed that some of the stolen property has been successfully recovered and will be returned to the rightful owners as the investigation continues.
