A 24-year-old man is facing a charge of stunt driving following a traffic stop conducted by the Windsor Police Traffic Enforcement Unit on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. in the 2300 block of Howard Avenue, where officers intercepted a speeding motorist.
Details of the Traffic Stop
According to police reports, the male driver was traveling at a speed of 104 kilometers per hour in a posted 50 km/h zone. This case is part of a broader pattern of aggressive driving enforcement in the city. On March 18, Windsor police charged three additional drivers with stunt driving, each allegedly exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 40 km/h. All three motorists were caught speeding in the 3600 block of Wyandotte Street East, east of Strabane Avenue.
- A 58-year-old woman was allegedly clocked at 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
- A 49-year-old man was stopped for allegedly traveling 92 km/h.
- A 39-year-old man was caught allegedly driving 91 km/h.
In mid-February, police stopped three motorists for stunt driving in separate incidents within less than 24 hours. These included:
- A 39-year-old male driver allegedly traveling double the 50 km/h speed limit near Dougall Avenue and Medina Street West.
- A 62-year-old male driver charged after allegedly traveling 93 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in the 3600 block of Wyandotte Street East.
- A 20-year-old male driver alleged to have been traveling 92 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in the same area.
In all these cases, drivers faced identical consequences: 14-day vehicle impoundments and 30-day license suspensions.
Severe Penalties for Stunt Driving Convictions
Convictions for stunt driving in Ontario carry substantial penalties designed to deter such dangerous behavior. For first offenses, individuals can face:
- Fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000
- Up to six months in jail
- License suspensions of one to three years
Repeat offenders face even stricter penalties, including longer license suspensions and potentially higher fines. These measures underscore the serious nature of stunt driving offenses and the commitment of law enforcement to road safety.
The Windsor Police Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to monitor high-risk areas and conduct targeted operations to address speeding and aggressive driving behaviors throughout the city.
