Tragedy in Paradise: Vancouver Business Owner Found Dead
A 67-year-old woman from Vancouver was found murdered earlier this week outside the spa resort she owned in western Belize, according to local authorities.
Marty Ann Thorne's body was discovered by a caretaker near the riverside of her property, Rawspa Cabanas, in Bullet Tree Falls village on the morning of Monday, November 10, 2025.
Discovery and Investigation Details
The grim discovery was made just before 8 a.m. when the caretaker arrived for work and could not locate Thorne inside the home. After searching the yard, he found her body near the water.
A police report from the Commissioner of Police Office in Belmopan City confirmed that the body exhibited several apparent stab wounds. The scene was secured, and Thorne's remains were transported to a hospital in San Ignacio, located approximately five kilometres away, for an official autopsy.
Authorities revealed they have retrieved surveillance footage from the property and are actively searching for a man believed to be known to Thorne in connection with their murder investigation.

In a heartfelt statement, Thorne's grieving family described her as a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. "Marty was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to many," the family shared. "She lived with deep compassion for people and an enduring love for our earth."
The family emphasized that her life was defined by kindness, generosity, and unwavering care for others. They have requested privacy as they process this devastating and senseless loss and confirmed they are cooperating with Belizean authorities as the investigation continues.
According to family members, Thorne had developed a deep appreciation for Belize over many frequent visits. The Caribbean nation had become an important and meaningful part of her life and community. She was a well-known figure in the local area where she operated her spa resort.

Global Affairs Canada has acknowledged the death of a Canadian citizen in Belize. Citing privacy considerations, the department declined to provide specific details but confirmed that consular officials are providing assistance to the family during this difficult time.
Thorne is survived by her two sons, who reside in Vancouver. The family has provided a photo of Marty Thorne for media use with permission from her son, Aaron Goff.
