Glamorous Toronto Lawyers Face Fraud Charges as Victims Await Lost Millions

Nicholas Cartel and Singa Bui were once the epitome of legal success, living a lavish lifestyle with a $5-million mansion in Lawrence Park, luxury cars like a Jaguar and Porsche, and designer wardrobes filled with Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks. However, their opulent world has crumbled dramatically, leaving a trail of financial ruin and betrayed trust among their clients.

From Jetsetting to Justice System

The couple's boutique law firm in Liberty Village began to unravel in 2023 when clients started reporting that millions of dollars held in trust from real estate deals were not being released. By December 2025, Bui, 42, was disbarred, and Cartel, 61, was suspended, with both facing disciplinary hearings before the Law Society Tribunal. More severely, Bui was arrested on 42 charges, including 24 counts of fraud over $5,000 and 17 counts of criminal breach of trust, while Cartel faces one count of fraud over $5,000.

Their financial downfall has been stark: their mansion sold at a $1 million loss, and they now reportedly live with family members. Numerous default judgments have been issued against them, with a recent order in January 2026 requiring Cartel to pay $500,000 in punitive damages to victims like the Ingarra family and firefighters Paul Evans and Shaun Henderson.

Victims' Plight and Legal Battles

Despite court victories, victims describe their wins as meaningless without actual repayment. Paul Evans, 59, who is nearing mandatory retirement, lost $202,000, while Shaun Henderson and his wife invested their life savings of $233,000 and have yet to recover any funds. "We did everything right," Henderson lamented. "We trusted professionals." They claim that safety nets, such as insurance and the Law Society's Compensation Fund, have failed to assist them.

Evans emphasized that their fight is not about revenge but about accountability: "It's about whether the protections people believe are in place actually work." In response, Cartel has vehemently denied wrongdoing, calling the court's conclusions erroneous and dismissing the criminal charge as baseless in an email statement.

Disciplinary Actions and Contempt Findings

Bui's disbarment was based on findings that she misappropriated or misapplied funds from trust accounts for 13 clients, with orders to pay $740,000 into the compensation fund and potentially up to $1 million more. Cartel has consistently distanced himself, claiming Bui managed the firm's finances while he focused on class-action law. However, court records reveal a pattern of evasion.

When Bui repeatedly missed hearings, Cartel cited her hospitalization for mental health issues and electroshock therapy. Yet, surveillance by a private investigator showed her walking with Cartel and their children, appearing unaided. Superior Court Judge William Chalmers noted in a ruling that Bui traveled to Portugal and Europe, including Milan and Zurich, when funds went missing, showing contempt for court orders.

In September 2024, Chalmers issued an arrest warrant for Bui, who eventually surrendered her passport. He found both in contempt for withholding financial records, jailing Cartel for 30 days and Bui for 20. The judge criticized their lack of remorse and failure to account for the missing millions.

Ongoing Struggle for Justice

As legal proceedings continue, victims like Henderson remain in limbo, seeking answers and accountability. "We want our money back – the money we spent decades saving, the money that was supposed to give our children a future," he wrote in a legal document. The case highlights broader concerns about trust in legal professionals and the efficacy of protective measures for clients in Ontario.
