Toronto Police are actively searching for a 33-year-old man wanted in connection with a violent assault that occurred in North York this week. The incident adds to several criminal cases currently being investigated across the Greater Toronto Area.

North York Assault Investigation

According to Toronto Police, officers responded to an emergency call near the intersection of Yonge Street and Empress Avenue at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. The location sits just north of Sheppard Avenue in North York.

Police allege that the victim was walking in the area when an unknown man approached from behind and physically assaulted them. The victim, who had no prior relationship with the attacker, sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Following their investigation, authorities identified Cassim Cummings, 33, of Toronto, as the primary suspect in the case. Police have issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Suspect Description and Public Appeal

Cassim Cummings is described as standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 165 pounds. He has a thin build, short black hair, and a black beard.

Markham Residential Break-In

In a separate incident, York Regional Police have charged a 26-year-old Markham man in connection with a residential break-and-enter that occurred earlier this month.

Police responded to reports of a break-in in progress in the area of Old Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East around 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. According to investigators, the suspect entered the home through an unlocked sliding door but fled when confronted by the homeowner.

Further investigation revealed that the same individual had attempted to gain access to at least two other residences in the vicinity earlier that morning.

Nishanth Selvaratnam, 26, of Markham was arrested on Saturday, November 23, and now faces multiple charges including:

  • Break-and-enter with intent
  • Two counts of trespass at night
  • Breach of probation

York Regional Police believe there may be additional victims and anticipate laying further charges as their investigation continues.

Additional GTA Criminal Cases

The police reports come alongside other recent criminal incidents in the Greater Toronto Area. York Regional Police have charged a 65-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville man with dangerous operation causing death and failing to stop causing death after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a transport truck in Vaughan on Thursday evening.

In a separate investigation, Hamilton Police have charged two Oakville men in connection with trafficking $120,000 worth of stolen Bell Canada cellphones. The investigation, which began in December 2024, led to the recovery of 183 stolen iPhone 16 Pro Max devices valued between $250,000 and $450,000.

These cases highlight ongoing law enforcement efforts across multiple jurisdictions to address criminal activity in the region.
