Canucks Prospect Anthony Romani Commits to Michigan State for Sophomore Campaign
Vancouver Canucks prospect Anthony Romani has announced his decision to return to Michigan State University for his sophomore season in the NCAA, following a promising debut year with the Spartans. The 20-year-old forward, drafted by the Canucks in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Draft, believes this move will further enhance his development as he aims for a future in professional hockey.
Strong Performance in Freshman Year
In his first season with Michigan State, Romani made a significant impact, scoring 14 goals and accumulating 28 points across 37 games. His performance helped the Spartans achieve a top ranking in the USCHO national polls for eight weeks during the 25-week season, culminating in a No. 3 finish in the final rankings. The team's season ended in the Frozen Four national tournament quarterfinals with a 4-3 overtime loss to Wisconsin, where Romani played on the second line alongside notable NHL draft picks.
Romani opted to forgo his final season of junior eligibility with the OHL's Barrie Colts, taking advantage of recent NCAA rule changes that allow players from Major Junior leagues to receive scholarships. This decision underscores his commitment to leveraging the NCAA's structured environment for athletic and personal growth.
Development and Physical Gains
Romani attributes his progress to the NCAA's schedule, which offers fewer games than junior hockey, allowing more time for strength and conditioning. He reports that he has become stronger, faster, and more explosive, with his weight increasing from 190 pounds last summer to 197 pounds. Mike Komisarek, part of the Canucks' player development department, praised Romani's tremendous year, noting huge strides in his physical transformation and on-ice performance.
Komisarek highlighted how Romani's improved physique has translated into better puck protection and increased physicality during games, marking a transition from a baby-faced boy at the draft to a man. This development is crucial as Romani prepares for potential NHL opportunities in the future.
Future Plans and Canucks' Outlook
The Canucks have until June 2028 to sign Romani to an entry-level contract, giving both parties ample time to assess his readiness for the professional ranks. Romani expressed that there is no fixed timeline for turning pro, emphasizing that the decision will be based on mutual agreement with the Canucks when he is deemed ready. He plans to attend the Canucks' development camp in July before returning to Michigan State for preseason training.
Romani is optimistic about the upcoming season, citing the competitive environment at Michigan State, which featured 15 NHL draft picks this past year. He believes that the program's culture, under Coach Adam Nightingale, fosters a championship mentality, with the team setting its sights on a national title next year. This environment, combined with the departure of several key players to the NHL, presents new opportunities for Romani to secure a more prominent role.
Background and Previous Achievements
Before joining Michigan State, Romani showcased his scoring prowess in the OHL, notably with a 58-goal, 111-point season for the North Bay Battalion in 2023-24. His journey included overcoming a broken clavicle injury during the 2024-25 season, which led to a trade to the Barrie Colts, where he continued to excel with 21 goals and 35 points in 35 regular season games. In the playoffs, he added 12 goals and 24 points in 16 games, demonstrating his clutch performance under pressure.
As Romani prepares for his sophomore year, his focus remains on continuous improvement, with the goal of eventually contributing to the Vancouver Canucks at the NHL level. His dedication to development and the supportive framework at Michigan State position him as a promising prospect to watch in the coming seasons.
