Swastikas Vandalize Jewish-Owned Businesses in Montreal, Sparking Hate Crime Probe
In a disturbing incident, swastikas were spray-painted on three neighboring Jewish-owned businesses in Montreal's St-Laurent borough, prompting an investigation by the Montreal police hate-crimes unit. The graffiti, discovered early Wednesday morning, has since been removed, but evidence has been preserved as authorities review surveillance footage and continue their probe.
Details of the Antisemitic Vandalism
According to Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils, officers responded to a 911 call around 3 a.m. on Wednesday after reports of graffiti on the storefront of a pharmacy on St-Louis St. Upon arrival, they found hate-related symbols not only on the pharmacy but also on two adjacent establishments: a butcher shop and an Italian kosher restaurant named Gourmetti. An employee at Gourmetti, who requested anonymity, confirmed that all three businesses are Jewish-owned.
Chèvrefils emphasized that the graffiti has been photographed for evidence, and nearby surveillance cameras are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. So far, no arrests have been made, and the case remains active.
Rising Antisemitic Incidents in Montreal
This vandalism occurs against a backdrop of escalating antisemitic hate crimes and incidents in Montreal over the past two years, a trend linked to the onset of the Israel-Hamas war. The recent international tensions, including attacks between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, have further heightened concerns globally and locally.
In Montreal, such incidents reflect a worrying pattern of targeted hostility toward the Jewish community. Similar events have been reported elsewhere, such as a shooting at a synagogue in Toronto's North York neighborhood, underscoring the broader regional impact.
Community and Police Response
The swift removal of the graffiti by business owners highlights efforts to mitigate the visual impact, but the emotional and psychological toll on the affected community persists. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in identifying the perpetrators.
As investigations proceed, this case underscores the urgent need for vigilance and action against hate crimes in Montreal and beyond.
