A significant child exploitation investigation stretching across multiple Northern Ontario communities has resulted in criminal charges against a Sault Ste. Marie resident, according to law enforcement officials.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cybercrime Investigation Team revealed that their extensive probe, dubbed "Project Aquatic," targeted individuals involved in sharing child sexual abuse material online. The investigation spanned several municipalities throughout the region.
Multi-Jurisdictional Police Effort
This case represents a coordinated effort between multiple police services, including the OPP's Digital Forensics Unit, Anishinabek Police Service, and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. The collaboration demonstrates the increasing sophistication of law enforcement in tackling internet-based crimes against children.
Authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in Sault Ste. Marie on June 12th, where they seized multiple electronic devices believed to contain evidence. Forensic examination of these devices is currently underway.
Charges and Court Proceedings
The 34-year-old suspect now faces serious criminal charges including:
- Possession of child pornography
 - Making available child pornography
 - Accessing child pornography
 
The accused has been released from custody with strict conditions and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on July 29th.
