The province's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has launched an investigation following an officer-involved shooting in Toronto's Jane-Finch neighbourhood on Monday afternoon. The incident unfolded after police responded to reports of a person armed with a knife.
Stabbing Leads to Police Shooting
Toronto Police said officers were called to the intersection of Jane Street and Shoreham Drive, north of Finch Avenue, at 3:26 p.m. on December 22, 2025. The call was regarding a person in possession of a knife. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals suffering from stab wounds. One of these victims was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police confronted a male suspect who was allegedly armed with an edged weapon. During the encounter, an officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect. The wounded male was also taken to a hospital. The SIU automatically invokes its mandate whenever police actions involve serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
Officers Injured, Suspects Sought in Separate Assault
The Toronto Police Service confirmed that two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident. They did not require hospitalization. The SIU's investigation is now underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.
In a separate and unrelated violent incident, Toronto Police are searching for two suspects after a brutal attack in North York on Sunday night. Officers responded to a medical call in the De Marco Boulevard and Lawrence Avenue West area shortly before 10 p.m. on December 21.
Investigators said a victim was walking westbound on the south side of Lawrence Avenue when a dark-coloured, four-door sedan stopped in front of them. The suspects activated the vehicle's four-way hazard lights, exited the car, and assaulted the individual before fleeing westbound on Lawrence. The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The suspects are described as white males wearing black baseball caps. Police are urging anyone with video, dashcam footage, or information about the assault, which occurred between 9:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., to contact them at 416-808-1200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Other Police News: Dentist Charged with Sexual Assault
In another development, Toronto Police have charged a 66-year-old Scarborough dentist with sexual assault. The charge relates to an incident alleged to have occurred on October 18, 2025, where a 21-year-old woman was reportedly assaulted while receiving treatment.
The accused, Muthuckumaru Illango of Toronto, turned himself in to police on December 5. He operates the dental clinic "Dr. Illango and Associates." Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
