Punjabi Activist Nancy Grewal Murdered in Windsor, Family Blames Khalistani Extremists
Outspoken Punjabi activist Nancy Grewal was brutally stabbed to death in Windsor, Ontario, in what police are calling an isolated incident. However, her family believes her murder is directly connected to her vocal opposition to the Khalistan separatist movement, with tensions from her homeland following her to Canada.
A Violent End on Block Lane
According to the LaSalle Police Service, officers and paramedics responded to a stabbing report just before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday at a residence on Block Lane. They discovered Grewal, 45, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
"The LaSalle Police Service offers our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ms. Grewal," police stated in a social media post. "To ease public concern, we are sharing that investigators are viewing this as an isolated incident."
Authorities have not disclosed whether they have identified any suspects or persons of interest in the ongoing investigation.
A Life of Activism and Threat
Nancy Grewal, originally from Punjab, India, was a well-known activist and YouTuber who openly shared her blunt views on religious and political matters. She immigrated to Canada in 2018 following her marriage, which later ended in divorce. Working as a caregiver and nurse, she was reportedly on duty at a client's home when she was attacked.
Her family, speaking to Indian media outlets including the Indian Express, contends that Grewal was targeted by Khalistani extremists due to her activism. Her mother, Shinderpal Kaur, revealed that Grewal had received numerous threats in recent months, which local police were aware of. Several months prior to the murder, Grewal's Windsor home was deliberately set on fire.
"My daughter never hesitated to speak the truth," Kaur told reporters. "My daughter demanded a proper investigation into the burning of the house. Now we want the truth behind that incident and a full investigation into her murder."
A Pattern of Intimidation
Kaur alleges a broader conspiracy involving three individuals, including one man from Windsor, in her daughter's death. She stated that Grewal had identified those she believed were threatening her life. In a separate earlier incident, a man allegedly broke into Grewal's residence but fled upon realizing he was being recorded by CCTV cameras.
"She told us about this incident and believed those people might harm her," Kaur explained. "I cannot describe the pain. My daughter was brutally killed."
Despite the dangers, Grewal remained committed to her cause and maintained close contact with her family. "She used to tell me everything about her patients and her routine," her mother shared. "Even when she was busy, she always found time to call. My daughter's only fault was that she spoke the truth and tried to help others. I want justice for my child."
