A lengthy Ontario missing persons investigation has taken a dramatic turn with police laying murder charges nearly a year after a Smiths Falls man vanished without trace.
Breakthrough in Mysterious Disappearance
The Ontario Provincial Police have announced a significant development in the puzzling case of Derek Whitehurst, who was reported missing in September 2023. After months of investigation, authorities have charged two individuals with first-degree murder in connection with his disappearance.
Charges Laid After Extensive Investigation
According to OPP officials, 40-year-old Derek Whitehurst was last seen in Smiths Falls during September 2023. His disappearance triggered an extensive investigation that spanned multiple months before culminating in the recent murder charges.
The accused individuals have been identified as:
- Nicholas St. Martin, 32, of Ottawa
 - Melissa Day, 35, of no fixed address

Both suspects now face first-degree murder charges and appeared in provincial court in Kingston for a bail hearing on Tuesday.
Ongoing Police Investigation
While the charges represent a major breakthrough, police indicate their investigation remains active. Authorities continue to appeal to anyone with information about Whitehurst's disappearance to come forward.
"This development brings us closer to understanding what happened to Derek," stated an OPP representative. "However, we still have work to do in building our case and providing answers to the family."
The case highlights the dedication of Ontario law enforcement in pursuing missing persons investigations, even when months have passed without resolution.
