Her photograph remains prominently displayed throughout the lobby and hallways of her Mississauga apartment building, a haunting reminder of a life interrupted. Yet, for four long years, there has been no sign of Mezhgan Aini. The 38-year-old seamstress and mother of three vanished sometime between June and September of 2022, seemingly disappearing into thin air.
A Family Left in the Dark
The life Mezhgan left behind continues within the walls of that apartment building near Queen Frederica Drive and Dundas Street West. Her husband, Mohammad Yama Aini, and their three children, aged eight to seventeen, still reside in the same unit. Standing at the doorway of the apartment where she was last seen, Mohammad expressed his profound confusion and grief to the Toronto Sun.
"They don't know," he stated softly, referring to the whereabouts of his wife. "Quite obvious, it's devastating."
Remarkably, Peel Regional Police were unaware of Mezhgan's disappearance until 2025. The missing person report was not filed by her husband, a store clerk, but by her family in her native Afghanistan. Her youngest brother, Mansoor Ahmadi, explained from Kabul that during phone calls with contacts in North America, the family was consistently assured that Mezhgan was "fine" and alive.
"We were told she was alive, but she seemingly wasn't," Ahmadi revealed, his voice heavy with sorrow.
Police Shift to Homicide Investigation
Law enforcement now holds a grim theory. Peel Regional Police believe Mezhgan Aini was the victim of a homicide. Their investigation has thus expanded from a missing persons case to a search for both her remains and her potential killer. Posters bearing her image and the urgent question "WHERE IS MEZHGAN?" have been placed in her apartment building, a public plea for information.
Authorities describe Mohammad Aini as having been "co-operative" throughout their inquiries. However, they have not disclosed specifics of their discussions with him. Police emphasize they maintain an open mind with no tunnel vision; no accusations have been made, and no charges have been laid at this stage.
A Troubled History Surfaces
The investigation has unearthed a disturbing incident from the couple's past. In 2017, while Mohammad was serving as a diplomat for the Afghan government at the United Nations in New York City, he drove Mezhgan to a hospital. She arrived with a bloodied eye and facial wounds that New York police suspected were inflicted by her husband.
Due to Mohammad's diplomatic immunity at the time, no charges were pursued. Reports indicate Mezhgan denied her husband harmed her, with Mohammad claiming she had tripped over a broom. Ahmadi acknowledged awareness of the allegations but noted his sister "did not talk about it" and "wanted a peaceful life." He remembered her as a "very kind, good lady" who deeply loved her children.
Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, Mezhgan's family grapples with the tragedy. Ahmadi stated the children were allegedly told their mother was simply "gone." Mohammad, citing a need to take his daughter to a dental clinic, declined to delve into case details with reporters but suggested he might be more prepared to discuss it at a later time.
