Man charged in Abbotsford extortion shooting

A 22-year-old man is now facing criminal charges following what police describe as a "reckless" public shooting connected to an extortion attempt at a business in Abbotsford.

Charges Laid After Mid-Morning Gunfire

Investigators with the Abbotsford Police Department's specialized extortion task force have charged Gursewak Singh. The charges relate to an incident that occurred on Tuesday, December 17, shortly before 11 a.m.

Police allege that Singh fired a gun in a public area in a manner that was knowing or reckless. The shooting was reported at a commercial location in the 31000-block of King Road.

Swift Arrest Following Police Coordination

After confirming the shooting, patrol officers immediately involved the department's gang crime unit. The investigation moved quickly. A police service dog handler from the Lower Mainland-wide unit later alerted officers to a suspect vehicle.

The vehicle was spotted travelling eastbound on Highway 1 near Whatcom Road. Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver, who was the vehicle's sole occupant. That individual was identified as Gursewak Singh.

Suspect in Custody, Public Assistance Sought

Singh remains in police custody. His next court appearance for a bail hearing is scheduled for Monday, December 23.

To aid their ongoing investigation, the Abbotsford Police Department has released a photograph of the accused. Authorities are urging anyone with information about this case to come forward.
