The incident, which occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, saw a coordinated response that left the suspects in custody without any major injuries reported.

According to Constable Nicholas Gluckstein, DRPS officers from the Central East division were dispatched to a robbery call at a jewelry store inside the Oshawa Centre, located at 419 King Street West, at approximately 3:45 p.m. Police reports indicate that four male suspects entered the store and proceeded to smash display cases with hammers, while a fifth suspect remained in a waiting vehicle outside. The suspects were allegedly armed with bear spray, adding a dangerous element to the brazen theft attempt.
Canine and Citizen Teamwork
As the suspects fled the mall, they were involved in a minor vehicle collision, which momentarily disrupted their escape. This provided an opportunity for intervention. A bystander, witnessing the chaos, stepped in and physically restrained one of the suspects using a headlock, holding him until police could arrive. Meanwhile, DRPS K9 officer Mack, alongside other officers and Oshawa Centre security personnel, moved swiftly to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Despite the alleged use of bear spray by the thieves, K9 Mack was undeterred and played a crucial role in the arrests both inside and outside the mall.
