Jewish Organizations Demand Police Action Over Antisemitic Protest Signs in Toronto

Prominent Jewish organizations in Toronto have issued strong condemnations and called for immediate police intervention following a weekend protest where demonstrators displayed what they describe as antisemitic signs reminiscent of Nazi-era propaganda. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), B'nai Brith Canada, and the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto have jointly denounced the imagery as promoting hate and dehumanizing Jewish people.

Disturbing Imagery Captured at Bathurst and Sheppard Protest

Photographs shared on social media platform X by user Leviathan (@l3v1at4an) and subsequently circulated by multiple Jewish organizations show protesters at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West bearing signs with deeply offensive content. The imagery includes a caricature of an emaciated Orthodox Jewish man emerging from a cave, a cartoonish depiction of a Jewish man in a kippah crying into a walkie-talkie covered with an American flag as missiles descend, and rats crawling through a hole shaped like the Star of David.

"These signs, displayed yesterday at Bathurst and Sheppard in the heart of Toronto's Jewish community, depict contemptuous and clearly antisemitic caricatures used for the sole purpose of dehumanizing Jews," stated the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in their social media response to the incident.

Organizations Call for Criminal Charges and Policy Changes

In a coordinated response, the Jewish organizations have taken multiple actions to address what they perceive as escalating threats against their community:

  • Filed formal complaints with the Toronto Police Service
  • Co-signed an open letter to Toronto Police Chief Myron Dimkew
  • Launched a website campaign titled "Demand Action From Toronto Police"
  • Called for police to declare unlawful any assemblies promoting hate speech

CIJA specifically noted in their public statement: "At protests at Bathurst & Sheppard, extremists openly made threats of violence, glorified terrorism, and depicted Jews as sub-human — yet no arrests have been announced. After multiple attacks on our community, many are asking why the law is not being enforced."

Police Response and Investigation Status

The Toronto Police Service has acknowledged awareness of the antisemitic signs displayed during the weekend demonstration. In an official statement posted online, police confirmed that their Hate Crime Unit investigators are actively consulting with the Ministry of the Attorney General regarding potential charges under the Criminal Code's promotion of hatred provisions.

"We're calling on TPS to investigate and lay charges, declare assemblies unlawful when there are activities that promote and incite hate, and make the necessary and critical changes to protect our city," emphasized the joint statement from the Jewish organizations.

The organizations' open letter to Police Chief Dimkew specifically described the protest imagery as "reminiscent of Nazi incitement," drawing direct parallels to historical antisemitic propaganda that preceded some of the darkest chapters in human history. This characterization underscores the severity with which community leaders view the incident and their urgent call for law enforcement intervention.
