Ottawa Police Report 27% Surge in Impaired Driving Collisions in Early 2026
The Ottawa Police Service has announced a concerning rise in impaired driving-related collisions during the first quarter of 2026, highlighting a significant public safety issue in the capital city.

According to police data released on Monday, April 6, impaired driving caused 56 collisions in Ottawa as of March 30. This represents a substantial 27 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025, when drugs or alcohol were involved in fewer incidents. Enforcement Efforts and RIDE Campaigns
In response to the rising numbers, Ottawa police conducted 17 RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaigns between March 13 and March 22. These initiatives resulted in 30 individuals being charged with impaired driving-related offences following:

Recent High-Profile Case
On April 3, the Ontario Provincial Police reported a particularly alarming incident involving a 56-year-old Kanata resident. The individual was charged with impaired driving and dangerous operation of a vehicle after registering more than four times the legal alcohol limit in his system. The arrest occurred following a complaint from another motorist about a possibly impaired driver on Highway 417 westbound near Pinecrest Road on April 2, just before 4 p.m.
