Charges Laid in Decade-Old Calgary Sexual Assault Case
Calgary police have announced that a man from Hamilton is now facing serious charges connected to a sexual assault that occurred in Calgary back in 2015. The accused, Bryan James Hayward, 37, has been charged with one count each of sexual assault and choking with intent.
Victim Comes Forward After a Decade
The investigation was initiated after the victim came forward to report the assault to the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in August 2025. According to police, the victim and the accused were known to each other and were in a relationship at the time the alleged incident took place.
The significant passage of time between the event and the report highlights a critical aspect of Canadian law. In Canada, there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault. This legal provision allows survivors to come forward on their own terms, regardless of how many years have passed.
Suspect in Custody as Investigation Continues
As a result of the investigation prompted by the victim's report, Hayward was identified and charged. He is currently held in custody in Hamilton, awaiting his next court appearance, which has not yet been scheduled by the judicial system.
The Calgary Police Service used this announcement to reiterate its commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence. They actively encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual crime to contact them, assuring the public that all reports are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly, no matter how much time has elapsed.
Authorities are asking anyone with information related to this incident to assist the investigation by calling the Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
