Hamilton homicide detectives have made a significant breakthrough in a cold case from 2023, arresting a suspect who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges. The accused, Erik Kalanyos, a 29-year-old Hamilton resident, now faces first-degree murder charges for the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Daniel Musafiri.
Investigation Leads to Incarcerated Suspect
According to Hamilton Police Service investigators, the incident occurred on December 29, 2023, around 10:48 p.m. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of York Boulevard and Queen Street North. Upon arrival, they discovered Musafiri suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Detectives determined that prior to the shooting, Musafiri had been at Boulevard Billiards. When he exited the pool hall, he was confronted by a suspect in the parking area of 103 Queen Street North. Following a brief verbal exchange, Musafiri was shot and killed. Witnesses reported the assailant fled the scene in a black Dodge Challenger.
Building a Case Through New Intelligence
During a subsequent investigation, homicide detectives obtained fresh information that provided additional intelligence linking a suspect to Musafiri's slaying. Investigators were able to build upon evidence gathered during the initial stages of the case, ultimately identifying Kalanyos as the primary suspect.
Kalanyos, who was already in custody on an unrelated matter, has now been formally arrested and charged. Police emphasized their commitment to the victim's family in a statement: "For more than two years, Daniel's family has carried the unimaginable weight of losing a loved one to violence. Investigators recognize the profound impact his death has had on those closest to him and have remained committed to pursuing justice on their behalf."
Accused Has Extensive Criminal History
Erik Kalanyos is no stranger to the justice system. He was previously convicted for a 2019 armed robbery at a local Shoppers Drug Mart, where a pharmacist was ordered to fill a garbage bag with narcotics. Police later recovered the narcotics, a loaded firearm, and two stolen vehicles connected to the crime. Kalanyos and three accomplices faced a total of 55 robbery and firearms charges.
In January 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police issued a release seeking information on Kalanyos for breaching his statutory release. He had been serving a three-year sentence for robbery, armed robbery, possession of property obtained by crime, and failure to comply with probation.
Family's Heartbreaking Loss
The victim's mother, Mosengo Immaculee, expressed her profound grief in a statement: "My life was completely shattered when my son was killed." Police acknowledged the family's pain, adding: "While no arrest can undo the pain of this loss, police hope this development provides some measure of relief as the matter proceeds through the courts."
Not the First Homicide at Boulevard Billiards
This tragic incident is not the first homicide to occur at or near Boulevard Billiards. In 2019, police alleged that Ibrahim Issak-Hussen shot and killed 29-year-old Obsa Junedi-Mohamed outside the same pool hall. Before an arrest could be made, Issak-Hussen fled to Ethiopia less than 36 hours after the shooting. Authorities are still working to extradite him back to Canada to face justice.
Hamilton Police are urging anyone with additional information about the Musafiri case to contact Detective Alex Buck at 905-546-4123. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to pursue all leads in this complex homicide case.
