French Father Faces Decades in Prison After Son Found Confined in Van for Over a Year
A French father is confronting the possibility of up to 30 years behind bars after authorities discovered his nine-year-old son malnourished and no longer able to walk, having been confined to a van for more than a year. The shocking case emerged in the eastern village of Hagenbach, where prosecutors revealed disturbing details of the child's ordeal.
Discovery of the Malnourished Child
Last week, officers opened a van in a shared courtyard to find the boy lying in a fetal position, severely undernourished and incapable of walking. A neighbor had alerted authorities after hearing sounds of a child coming from the vehicle, prompting the investigation that uncovered this tragic situation.
The 43-year-old father, who has been remanded in custody, faces serious charges including confining the child and depriving him of essential care. Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz confirmed the potential 30-year sentence, highlighting the gravity of the allegations.
The Father's Admission and Justification
The father has admitted to the charges but claimed he was attempting to protect his son from his new partner, who allegedly "wanted him to be admitted to a psychiatric ward." According to the prosecutor, the boy described having a "very bad relationship with his stepmother," calling her "his worst enemy and as mean."
The child told investigators that his father had "no choice" but to place him in the van in September 2024, as he refused to stay with his mother, who has struggled with mental health issues. The father reportedly brought him water and food twice daily, usually cold meals, while the boy had to urinate into empty bottles and slept on a mattress without proper hygiene facilities.
Family Dynamics and Additional Charges
The boy's 12-year-old sister, who remained in the family home, told authorities she believed her brother had been committed to a psychiatric hospital. She reported that his behavior changed after their father moved in with his new partner and her daughter, becoming violent and often insulting his stepmother.
The father's parents noted the boy had become "difficult" and prone to "tantrums" following his parents' separation in 2022. Meanwhile, the mother revealed she had been treated at a psychiatric hospital between 2022 and 2024 and had been granted visitation rights with a social worker present but had been unable to exercise them.
The stepmother now faces up to seven years in prison for failing to help a child in danger, though she has denied any wrongdoing. The young victim has been hospitalized in Mulhouse as authorities continue their investigation into this distressing case of alleged family violence and neglect.
