A retired Edmonton Police Service officer has been charged with breach of trust for allegedly sharing investigative information with the media, authorities announced Wednesday.
Details of the Charge
The former officer, whose identity has not been released, faces one count of breach of trust under the Criminal Code. The charge stems from an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), which found that the officer leaked confidential information related to an ongoing police investigation to a media outlet.
According to a statement from ASIRT, the alleged leak occurred in 2023 and compromised the integrity of the investigation. The retired officer served with the Edmonton Police Service for over 20 years before retiring in 2022.
Impact and Reactions
“This is a serious breach of the public trust placed in police officers,” said an ASIRT spokesperson. “We take any allegation of misconduct seriously and will pursue charges when warranted.” The Edmonton Police Service has declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on July 15, 2025. If convicted, the former officer could face up to five years in prison.
