Calgary Murder Suspect's Preliminary Inquiry Commences in Fatal Shooting Case
Evidence presentation began on Monday in the preliminary inquiry for Calgary murder suspect Devon Bradley Malik, who faces charges in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend last summer. Before calling the first of an anticipated nineteen witnesses, Crown prosecutor Greg Piper informed Justice Heather Lamoureux that defense counsel Jim Lutz would not contest his client's committal to trial. A preliminary inquiry serves to establish whether there is some evidence for a jury to consider, representing a relatively low threshold for the prosecution to meet.
Defense counsel Lutz also requested a publication ban on evidence presented by prosecutors Greg Piper and Ryan Foran, a common practice in preliminary hearings to protect the integrity of future trial proceedings. Justice Lamoureux granted the mandatory order, restricting public disclosure of specific evidentiary details.
Background of the Case
Devon Bradley Malik, aged twenty-seven, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the July 19, 2025, fatal shooting of his estranged girlfriend, Madisson Cobb. The incident occurred in a parking garage near the Macleod Trail S.W. LASIK MD clinic where Cobb was employed. At the time of the shooting, Malik was under a court order prohibiting contact with the Okotoks resident or attendance at her workplace.
Approximately one month before her tragic death, Cobb, aged twenty-three, obtained a restraining order from Calgary Court of King's Bench Justice Eleanor Funk. In her sworn affidavit, Cobb expressed significant fear regarding Malik, with whom she had ended a nearly year-long relationship in January 2025.
Victim's Concerns and Legal Protections
In her legal documentation, Cobb revealed that the RCMP had informed her about Malik possessing a firearm that authorities had been unable to locate. "The RCMP made us aware that Devon has a firearm that they were unable to find, and Devon confirmed that he had one when speaking to me," the slain woman stated in her affidavit.
Cobb described how her ex-boyfriend had inundated her with messages and calls following their breakup on January 28, 2025. The restraining order, granted on June 10, 2025, prohibited Malik from being within one hundred meters of Cobb, her Okotoks residence, or her workplace.
"This past month I have been living in fear, shake and have panic attacks when I'm out or hear my phone go off out of fear he is there," Cobb wrote in her affidavit, clearly indicating her apprehension about potential harm from Malik.
Family Perspectives and Current Status
Following an early court appearance by Malik in July 2025, one of his aunts, who requested anonymity, commented that the family had attempted to assist Cobb in distancing herself from the accused. "All she wanted was for Devon to get help," the aunt stated, suggesting underlying concerns about Malik's well-being.
Devon Bradley Malik remains in custody pending the outcome of the preliminary inquiry and any subsequent trial proceedings. The legal process continues as prosecutors present evidence to establish whether the case should proceed to a full jury trial.
