Brampton Shooting Investigated as Familial Violence

Peel Regional Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Brampton that occurred on Friday evening, resulting in the death of a man in his 20s. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence near Dartford Road and Balmoral Drive, in the vicinity of Bramalea Road and Clark Boulevard, shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, police discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Constable Tyler Bell-Morena addressed reporters at the location, confirming that a man in his 30s was arrested and is believed to be the sole suspect in this incident.

Police Confirm Suspect and Victim Were Related

Authorities have indicated that the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence. "At this point, we suspect they are related, and the exact nature of the relationship is unknown – whether it is cousin, uncle, brother, father, we don’t know – but associated to the residence and known to one another, yes," Bell-Morena stated. He further explained that the deadly altercation is believed to be isolated to the occupants of the home.

"We believe at this point that this is an incident of familial violence," he added, noting that someone inside the residence placed the emergency call to 911. Police have confirmed that there are no outstanding suspects in this case, and the investigation is ongoing.

Separate Incident: Toronto Man Charged with Threats Against Pickering Mosque

In an unrelated matter, Durham Regional Police have charged a 65-year-old Toronto man with uttering threats following an investigation into online threats directed at a mosque in north Pickering. The Hate Crime and Extremism Unit received information from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Wednesday regarding alleged threats made toward the Ahmadiyya Durham Mosque Baitul Mahdi, located at 3505 Salem Road, south of Highway 7.

Investigators identified a suspect and arrested Ivan John Mujan in Toronto on Thursday. He has been charged with uttering threats and was subsequently released on an undertaking. Police emphasized the seriousness of such incidents in a statement released on Friday.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Community Safety

"We recognize the significant impact these types of incidents have on our community, particularly among members of the Muslim communities," police stated. "Acts that target or instill fear in any group are unacceptable and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in our community."

Authorities added that they are working closely with community leaders to provide support and reassurance, standing firmly against hate, discrimination, and intolerance in all forms. Anyone with information about this or similar incidents is encouraged to contact the Hate Crime and Extremism Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5859, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

These two incidents, while occurring in different jurisdictions and involving distinct circumstances, highlight ongoing law enforcement efforts to address both violent crimes and hate-motivated threats in the Greater Toronto Area.
