Brampton man detained in U.S. over stolen Ontario big rig

A 24-year-old man from Brampton, Ontario, is facing serious charges in the United States after Michigan authorities arrested him for allegedly driving a stolen commercial truck near a major international crossing.

Arrest at the Border Following Traffic Stop

Yuvraj Singh, 24, was arraigned on Monday in Michigan's 91st District Court. The charges stem from an incident on Friday, December 13, 2025, around 7:35 p.m., when a Michigan State Police motor carrier officer pulled over his semi-truck for commercial vehicle violations in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The location is just across the border from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, near the busy International Bridge crossing. Upon investigation, police discovered the truck had been reported stolen in Ontario. Authorities noted the vehicle identification number (VIN) had been altered in what appeared to be an attempt to hide the truck's true identity.

Charges and Conditions of Release

Singh was charged with multiple offences, including receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle, motor vehicle fraud, and possessing an invalid licence plate. Following his arrest, both the semi-tractor and its trailer were seized and towed from the scene.

After being held in the Chippewa County Jail, Singh was released on a personal recognizance bond with strict conditions. He must surrender his passport, remain within Chippewa County or the state of Michigan, and is required to wear a GPS tether for monitoring.

Cross-Border Coordination and Holiday Travel Reminder

The Michigan State Police were assisted in the case by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, and a commercial auto recovery service. In a separate but timely notice, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a reminder on Tuesday about anticipated delays at Michigan border crossings—including Detroit, Port Huron, and Sault Ste. Marie—during the busy holiday travel period.

Travellers are advised to have all necessary documents ready and to consider leaving gifts unwrapped to facilitate inspection when crossing the border.
