Belle River Father Convicted of Sexually Assaulting Teen Babysitters

A Windsor judge has delivered a guilty verdict against a Belle River man for sexually assaulting three minors who worked as babysitters for his children. Allen Corcoran, 47, was found guilty on seven of eight charges, which included sexual assault of a minor, indecent exposure, and inviting sexual touching.

Details of the Case and Court Proceedings

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice heard that the victims were between 12 and 15 years old at the time of the offences, which occurred in 2017 and 2018. These young individuals had been hired to care for Corcoran's children, and their identities remain protected under a court-ordered publication ban.

In her ruling on Tuesday, Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia stated that the testimony provided by the complainants was both credible and reliable. She firmly rejected the defence's argument, presented by lawyer Paul Esco, which suggested that the victims had colluded with each other before giving evidence.

Justice Carroccia emphasized, "While some of the witnesses knew that the others had made complaints, there was no evidence that they either intentionally concocted their evidence or inadvertently influenced each other's evidence."

Timeline and Nature of the Offences

The incidents took place over a two-year period, either at Corcoran's residence in Belle River or in his truck while he was driving the youths home after their babysitting duties. Corcoran was 43 years old when the Ontario Provincial Police arrested and charged him in 2022.

According to the court's findings, the youngest complainant was a regular babysitter at Corcoran's household. She was just 12 years old in 2017 when she became the victim of several sexual incidents. One particularly distressing event occurred while she was changing the diaper of one of Corcoran's children.

Justice Carroccia described the incident: "(Corcoran) came up behind her and put his hand up under her sports bra … and grabbed her breasts. She was very scared and didn't know what to do."

Further Incidents and Defence Arguments

In another harrowing account, the judge detailed an incident where Corcoran was driving the babysitter home with his own children in the backseat. The victim reported that Corcoran "was playing with his penis or masturbating and was trying to get her to touch it." She further testified that he "took his hands off the steering wheel and threatened to crash the car" while attempting to grab her hand.

Additionally, the victim stated that during babysitting sessions, Corcoran would sometimes follow her from room to room while masturbating. The defence contended during the trial that several of these incidents involved "accidental touching as opposed to an intentional act," but this argument was ultimately dismissed by the court.

The case highlights serious breaches of trust and the vulnerability of minors in caregiving roles, with the court's decision underscoring the importance of credible witness testimony in achieving justice.
