Breakthrough in 2023 Homicide Case
Toronto Police have made a significant arrest in a cold-case homicide that occurred more than two years ago in the city's Cabbagetown neighborhood. Yasir Mohamed, 27, was taken into custody on Friday, November 7, 2025, and now faces multiple charges including first-degree murder for the killing of 36-year-old Mohamed Ahmed.
Daylight Shooting Shocked Community
The violent incident unfolded in broad daylight near Sherbourne and Shuter Streets on July 23, 2023. According to police reports, officers responded to the scene shortly after noon and discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle. Despite emergency efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as Mohamed Ahmed, brother of Juno Award-winning rapper Mustafa the Poet. Mustafa Ahmed, known professionally for his musical achievements, had been associated with the Regent Park collective called the Halal Gang. The killing sent shockwaves through Toronto's music community and raised concerns about public safety.
Ongoing Manhunt for Second Suspect
Within a week of the 2023 shooting, homicide detectives had obtained arrest warrants for two suspects: Mohammed Abdullahi, 34, and Yasir Mohamed, 27, both Toronto residents wanted for first-degree murder.
The recent arrest of Yasir Mohamed came after the Toronto Police Fugitive Squad located him on November 7. Police have not disclosed specific details about where they apprehended the suspect, who had been featured on the Bolo Program's list of Canada's 25 most wanted in 2024.
Mohamed now faces multiple charges including:
- First-degree murder
- Pointing a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Assault with a weapon
- Possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
- Two counts of failure to comply with a recognizance order
He appeared for a bail hearing in Toronto court on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
Meanwhile, the search continues for Mohammed Abdullahi, who remains at large and is still wanted for first-degree murder.
