Arrest Made in Fatal Mississauga Hit-and-Run
Peel Regional Police have made an arrest in a devastating hit-and-run case that claimed the life of a 56-year-old Mississauga man. The incident occurred on November 14, 2025, just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Eglinton Ave. W. and Fallingbrook Dr.
According to police investigators, a Mini Cooper struck pedestrian Santosh Kumar Patra, then fled the scene without stopping to render assistance. The driver allegedly took extraordinary measures to avoid detection by removing the vehicle's rear license plate after the collision.
How Police Tracked the Suspect
Through an extensive canvass of the area, investigators located CCTV footage that captured a male suspect removing the license plate and concealing it in the trunk before fleeing. This crucial evidence led police to identify and locate the involved vehicle.
On Tuesday, November 19, 2025, police arrested Romany Elhariry, 46, of Mississauga. He faces a single charge of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death. His first court appearance is scheduled for December 22, 2025 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
Family Mourns Beloved Father and Husband
The victim's family requested that police identify Santosh Kumar Patra, whom they describe as a kind and family-oriented man. In a heartfelt GoFundMe campaign, the family shared their profound grief, calling the collision devastating and the loss shocking.
They remembered Patra as someone who loved sharing stories and would often strike up conversations with strangers. The fundraiser has exceeded $15,000 as of Thursday morning, with proceeds going toward funeral costs, time off work, and bills during this difficult period.
Peel police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews emphasized the tragedy of losing an innocent member of our community due to reckless actions and commended the collaboration between police and the public that led to the suspect's identification.
