Airdrie Teen Faces Multiple Charges After Machete Robbery at McDonald's
Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Airdrie have arrested and charged a 16-year-old male following a disturbing incident involving a machete at a local McDonald's restaurant. The events unfolded earlier this week, culminating in a police search that temporarily locked down three area schools.
Initial Robbery Incident
According to RCMP statements, the initial confrontation occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the McDonald's location on Edmonton Trail. Police report that one youth allegedly robbed another youth while armed with a machete. No injuries were reported from this initial incident, which authorities note was not formally reported to police at the time.
Second Confrontation and Police Response
The situation escalated the following day when the victim returned to the same McDonald's with a group of friends to confront the suspect about the alleged theft. During this confrontation, the suspect reportedly pulled a large machete from his waistband and began waving it toward the group, according to RCMP.
A McDonald's employee immediately called 911, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. Again, no injuries were reported from this second incident. In response, RCMP issued a temporary secure-and-hold order for three schools in the area as officers conducted their search for the armed suspect.
Arrest and Recovery of Weapon
Officers located the suspect in an alley near Centre Avenue and Virginia Street. After a brief chase, the 16-year-old was arrested without incident. Police were able to recover the machete, which they say the suspect had attempted to discard during the pursuit.
Criminal Charges Filed
The Airdrie teen now faces multiple criminal charges, including:
- Assault with a weapon
- Two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Two counts of carrying a concealed weapon
- Four counts of failure to comply with a sentence order under the Youth Criminal Justice Act
The youth was scheduled to appear in Airdrie court on Friday morning to face these charges. The case highlights ongoing concerns about youth violence and weapon-related crimes in the community.
RCMP emphasize that both incidents occurred without physical injury to any parties involved, though the psychological impact on those present remains a concern. The investigation continues as authorities work to understand the full circumstances surrounding these alarming events.
