Tampa Police Chase Ends in Deadly Bar Crash

A chaotic police pursuit through the streets of Tampa, Florida, ended in a devastating tragedy early Saturday morning, November 8, 2025. A speeding car, fleeing from law enforcement, lost control and plowed into a crowd of people outside a bar in the historic Ybor City district. The violent impact resulted in four fatalities and left eleven others injured.

Details of the Pursuit and Crash

The sequence of events began around 12:40 a.m. when an air patrol unit with the Tampa Police Department spotted a silver sedan driving recklessly on a freeway. Authorities stated the same vehicle had previously been seen street racing in another neighbourhood.

The Florida Highway Patrol subsequently took over the pursuit and attempted a PIT maneuver (Precision Immobilization Technique) to stop the fleeing car. This tactic, which involves bumping the rear fender of a vehicle to spin it out, was unsuccessful. As the sedan sped toward the densely populated Ybor City area near downtown, highway patrol officers made the decision to disengage from the chase.

Shortly thereafter, the driver, identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, lost control of the vehicle. The car careened into a group of people outside a bar on the 1500 block of E 7th Avenue, striking more than a dozen individuals. Police confirmed that no shots were fired during the incident and that the driver was detained at the scene.

Victims and Aftermath

The consequences of the crash were severe and immediate. Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The total casualty count included:

  • Four fatalities
  • One victim in critical condition
  • Eight victims hospitalized in stable condition
  • Two victims with minor injuries who declined treatment

All fifteen people involved in the incident were confirmed to be adults. The Tampa Police Department swiftly closed 7th Avenue between surrounding streets as they investigated the fatal collision.

In a statement, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw called the event a "senseless tragedy" and expressed that the department's hearts were with the victims' loved ones and all those impacted.

Suspect Faces Serious Charges

Silas Sampson was booked on Saturday and is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail. Court documents reveal he is facing serious felony charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. As of the latest reports, no attorney was listed for Sampson.
