The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a hate-motivated incident at a Glencoe school where a Pride flag was stolen after the flagpole was toppled. The incident occurred overnight between June 9 and 10, 2026.
Incident Details
Police responded to a call at the school early Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, officers discovered the flagpole had been knocked down and the Pride flag was missing. The flagpole was later found discarded on school property.
Investigation
The OPP's Hate Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and seeking witnesses. No arrests have been made yet.
“This is a disturbing act of hate that targets the 2SLGBTQ+ community,” said OPP Constable Mark Johnson. “We are committed to finding those responsible and holding them accountable.”
Community Response
Local community leaders have condemned the theft and vandalism. The school board released a statement expressing solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to replace the flag and flagpole, raising over $2,000 within hours.
Similar Incidents
This incident is part of a rising trend of anti-2SLGBTQ+ vandalism across Ontario. In recent months, several Pride flags have been stolen or damaged in similar attacks.
