Two extraordinary Indigenous women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside are being celebrated with one of Canada's most prestigious civilian honours, recognizing their lifelong dedication to community service and advocacy.
Decades of Devotion Recognized
Mary Clare D'Souza and Doreen Manuel, both pillars of the DTES community, have been selected to receive the Order of Canada's Meritorious Service Decoration. This national honour acknowledges individuals who have performed exceptional deeds that bring honour to the country.
Mary Clare D'Souza, a 78-year-old activist affectionately known as "Muggs," has been a constant presence in the Downtown Eastside for over five decades. Her work has touched countless lives through various community initiatives and support programs.
Doreen Manuel, a 67-year-old filmmaker and educator from the Neskonlith Indian Band, has dedicated her life to preserving Indigenous culture and supporting vulnerable community members through education and the arts.
Transformative Community Impact
These remarkable women have been instrumental in creating positive change in one of Canada's most challenged neighbourhoods. Their work spans multiple areas of community need:
- Providing essential support services to marginalized residents
 - Preserving and promoting Indigenous cultural practices
 - Creating educational opportunities for underserved populations
 - Advocating for systemic change and social justice
 - Mentoring future generations of community leaders

A Legacy of Leadership
The recognition comes as a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the enduring strength of Indigenous leadership. Both women have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, often without seeking recognition, to improve living conditions and create opportunities for those most in need.
"This honour isn't just about us," one of the recipients noted in previous interviews. "It's about recognizing the strength and resilience of our entire community."
The Meritorious Service Decorations will be presented at a formal ceremony later this year, where these inspiring women will take their place among Canada's most distinguished citizens.
