A Virgin Voyages cruise ship scheduled to carry over 2,000 gay passengers and gay icon Patti LuPone was denied permission to dock in the Turkish port of Kuşadası just days before its July 7 arrival. The cancellation, communicated on July 2, was attributed by local authorities to the passengers' behavior not aligning with Turkey's societal structure and moral values.
Atlantis Events CEO Responds
Rich Campbell, CEO of Atlantis Events, the organizer of the LGBTQ+ cruise, stated he was informed of the ban on July 2. A social media post from Turkish authorities cited that the cruise passengers' conduct "do not align with the structure of our society and our moral values." Campbell noted the irony, as gay travelers often behave more respectfully than the bachelor and bachelorette parties common on such cruises. He characterized the decision as discriminatory code against LGBTQ+ individuals.
Patti LuPone's Outrage
Patti LuPone, who was to perform on the cruise, expressed fury on Instagram: "The Atlantis cruise I am performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship — a magnificent ship — full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board. I am furious, but I am sailing, as the ship will make other ports of call. I am ready to perform for all the wonderful men on this Atlantis cruise, who deserve so much better than this."
Historical Context and Discrimination
According to Campbell, Atlantis Events' gay cruises had docked in Kuşadası or Istanbul 13 times over the past 25 years without incident. Although Turkey does not explicitly criminalize homosexuality, it lacks laws protecting LGBTQ+ individuals, leaving treatment subject to discretion. In 2000, a similar ban on a gay cruise was met with an apology from then-tourism minister Erkan Mumcu, who stated, "We cannot discriminate according to people's sexual preference," as reported by The Guardian. This time, citizen concerns reportedly influenced the decision.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of LGBTQ+ travelers in regions without explicit anti-discrimination protections. The rise of right-wing governments globally may have emboldened such exclusion, but even arbitrary bans can occur with impunity.
Resilience and Cultural Impact
Despite the setback, the cruise will proceed with alternative ports. LuPone's vocal criticism has galvanized support, underscoring the cultural power of LGBTQ+ icons. The episode serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by queer communities worldwide, even as they continue to celebrate their identities.
