Windsor woman charged with impaired driving after Hwy 401 crash

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 32-year-old Windsor woman with impaired driving and dangerous driving following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Lakeshore that left a 10-year-old child with life-threatening injuries.

Crash details

Emergency crews, including OPP and Essex Windsor Emergency Medical Services, responded to the crash near County Road 27 at approximately 6:54 p.m. on June 21. Both drivers and two child passengers were transported to Windsor Regional Hospital by ambulance.

Police reported that an eight-year-old child and both drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while a 10-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. The collision prompted a temporary closure of Highway 401, which has since reopened.

Charges and penalties

The woman has been charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, and dangerous operation causing bodily harm. Under provincial law, police also imposed a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on July 30.

Provincial police reminded motorists that impaired driving remains a serious public safety issue and urged anyone who suspects an impaired driver to call 911.
