An emotional day unfolded in a Saskatoon courtroom as the family of Natalie Gardipy, a 22-year-old woman who died in a motor vehicle collision, heard the Crown and defence jointly recommend a two-year sentence for the driver involved. The crash, which occurred last year, claimed Gardipy's life and has left her family devastated.
The driver, whose identity is protected under a publication ban, appeared in court on Tuesday. Both the prosecution and defense agreed that a two-year prison term would be appropriate, citing mitigating factors including the driver's lack of prior criminal record and expression of remorse. However, the victim's family expressed anger and grief, stating that no sentence could bring Natalie back.
Gardipy was described by her family as a bright and loving young woman with a promising future. Her mother, in a victim impact statement, said the loss has been unbearable. The court heard that the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle, causing the fatal crash. Toxicology reports indicated no alcohol or drugs were involved.
The judge is expected to deliver the sentence in the coming weeks. The case has drawn attention to road safety in Saskatchewan, where fatal collisions remain a concern.
