The Wood Buffalo RCMP has officially relaunched its Facebook page, aiming to strengthen communication between police and the Fort McMurray region community. The page, originally created years ago, faced major usage restrictions from Meta following the passage of Bill C-18, but is now fully operational again.
Page relaunch details
In a release on Monday, the Wood Buffalo RCMP stated that the platform will provide timely information on public safety, crime prevention tips, community events, and updates on policing activities throughout the region. Staff Sergeant Sabrina Clayton, Acting Operations Support Officer and Public Information Officer, described the launch as “another step toward strengthening our connection with residents, community partners and stakeholders across the region.”
Clayton noted that Meta previously prevented the RCMP from maintaining a Facebook presence. “Meta would not allow us to even have a Facebook page,” she said. The RCMP was confined to operating outside such platforms until rules changed, enabling their return.
Community demand and context
The relaunch follows two notable community-driven actions on Facebook. In March 2025, a petition to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo council demanded a reversal of changes to the Transit On Demand and Specialized Transit system. More recently, on June 11, frustrated residents, local businesses, contractors, volunteers, and Indigenous leaders used Facebook to highlight a Highway 63 road repair event and potholes they say the government should have addressed.
Clayton emphasized that the RCMP listened to community feedback. “We keep hearing, through our community engagements, that Facebook is a platform they respond to,” she said. The annual policing priorities survey and community priority survey consistently indicated a need for police presence online. “We’ve listened, we’ve acted on it and we’re trying to make ourselves more available,” Clayton added.
Broader social media landscape
The Fort McMurray community has a strong Facebook presence, with numerous discussion groups, buy-and-sell groups, and rental groups. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Mayor Sandy Bowman also maintain active profiles on the platform. The Wood Buffalo RCMP’s official Facebook page relaunch aligns with this trend, aiming to meet residents where they already engage online.
