Windsor and Amherstburg Officials Push Back on Diageo Settlement Fund Restrictions
Officials in Windsor and Amherstburg are voicing strong opposition to restrictions placed on funds from a settlement with Diageo, the global spirits company. The settlement, which stems from environmental and operational issues at the Diageo plant in Amherstburg, Ontario, includes a financial package that local leaders say comes with too many strings attached.
In a joint statement, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue expressed frustration that the funds cannot be used for general municipal purposes. Instead, they are tied to specific projects approved by the provincial government, limiting local autonomy.
“We are grateful for the settlement, but the restrictions undermine our ability to address the most pressing needs of our communities,” Dilkens said. “We need flexibility to invest in infrastructure, public safety, and economic development as we see fit.”
The Diageo plant, located in Amherstburg, has been a source of controversy due to odors and other environmental concerns. The settlement, announced earlier this year, includes millions of dollars for community projects and environmental remediation.
However, local officials argue that the province’s oversight of the funds is excessive. They are calling for a renegotiation of the terms to allow for greater local control. “Our residents deserve a say in how this money is spent,” Prue added.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between municipal and provincial governments over resource allocation. Windsor and Amherstburg are seeking a meeting with provincial ministers to discuss the matter further.
