In April 2022, Wagner told Le Devoir that the protests on Wellington Street represented a "small beginning of anarchy" where certain individuals decided to "take other citizens hostage" and "take the law into their own hands." He called the protesters ignorant, suggested some were remote-controlled, and stated that their actions "must be denounced forcefully, and this by all figures of power in the country."
Recusal Request Denied
Kristen Nagle of Canadian Frontline Nurses, one of the groups challenging the Emergencies Act, requested Wagner's recusal in March. In response, Supreme Court Registrar Chantal Carbonneau conveyed Wagner's conclusion that there is "no actual or reasonable apprehension of bias that would require his recusal under the applicable legal test." Wagner asserted that he never directly or indirectly commented on the Emergencies Act itself.
