Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday addressed the nationwide affordability crisis but blamed Democrats for high housing prices — despite President Donald Trump holding hostage a bipartisan bill that could reduce those costs.
“I would love it ... if they were willing to work with us on lowering housing prices, on lowering gasoline prices, on actually making the lives of American citizens better,” Vance told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “We could have some real bipartisan compromise.”
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act was passed by Congress with massive majorities last week, only for Trump to cancel plans for a signing in an effort to pressure lawmakers into approving his radical overhaul of voting procedures. The act was crafted to address widespread affordability issues concerning homeownership and would attempt to reduce costs by expediting the development of single-family homes and barring private equity firms from buying those properties.
Trump is holding the bill hostage to pressure Congress into passing the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification for voting to address what Trump baselessly claims is a “National Emergency” of voter fraud.
Critics Slam Vance
Vance was skewered by critics after heaping blame for the affordability crisis on Democrats. “Vance is not only a damn liar, but stupid! The House and Senate passed a housing bill to do just that, and Trump refuses to sign it,” wrote one X user. Another stated: “Liar. Trump refuses to sign the affordable housing act, and he’s also responsible for the high fuel prices.”
The vice president immediately changed the subject after blaming Democrats for high housing and gas prices, which skyrocketed after Trump launched his war on Iran earlier this year, and trashed the opposition. “They are talking about abolishing the police and letting criminals rule our cities,” Vance said about democratic socialists who won their primaries last week. “That is a fundamental transformation of the Democratic Party. It’s very bad for our country ... and it just drives home why we have to keep these people from getting close to power.”
Impact of Trump's War on Iran
Trump’s war has not only driven up gas prices but sparked fears of a global energy crisis, as Iran responded to joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in February by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes.
Vance was trounced by social media critics as “delusional” — and worse. One user tweeted: “I’m old enough to remember when every single House Republican voted against the gas price gouging bill. Trump is the one holding up a bipartisan housing bill.” Another wrote: “OMG! Dems are running on AFFORDABILITY. @JDVance is running on CORRUPTION.”
“They did, and your boss chose to screw Americans over for the SAVE Act,” said another critic. “There's a bipartisan bill waiting for the President to sign, which he has refused to do. And when Republicans had control of Congress the last two years of Biden's presidency, Republicans refused to work with him on anything,” added another user.
“Dems already passed the bipartisan housing bill with veto-proof majorities. Trump just called it ‘a yawn,’ killed the signing, and said SAVE Act first. JD Vance is out here blasting Dems anyway. Olympic level hypocrisy,” concluded one observer.
