Vice President JD Vance Urges Pope to Exercise Theological Caution
During a Turning Point USA event on Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance issued a pointed message to Pope Leo XIV, advising the pontiff to "be careful" when addressing matters of theology. Vance's remarks came as the pope embarks on an extensive visit to four African nations, highlighting a growing tension between political and religious discourse.
Vance References Just War Theory in Critique
Vance specifically challenged the pope's recent statement that "God is never on the side of those who wield the sword." The vice president countered this assertion by invoking the long-standing tradition of Just War Theory, which spans more than a millennium within Christian thought. "We can of course have disagreements about whether this or that conflict is just," Vance acknowledged, but he emphasized the importance of theological precision.
Drawing a parallel to his own responsibilities, Vance stated, "In the same way that it's important for the vice president of the United States to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology." He further stressed that theological opinions must be "anchored in the truth," a principle he claims to uphold in his own public statements.
Context of Vance's Conversion and Political Backdrop
Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019 after previously identifying as an Episcopalian, has faced scrutiny over his religious authenticity. Notably, the church featured on the cover of his upcoming book, "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," is actually a United Methodist house of worship, not a Catholic one, leading to awkward questions about his commitment to the faith.
His advice to the pope follows President Donald Trump's sharp criticism of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday. Trump lambasted the pope's calls for peace amid the Iran war and shared an artificial intelligence-generated image portraying himself as a Christ-like figure, which was widely condemned as blasphemous by both Democrats and Republicans.
Political Reactions and Vance's Evolving Stance
Vance's remarks have sparked brutal reactions on social media, with many users questioning his theological authority. Additionally, during the Turning Point event, he was heckled over U.S. support for Israel, indicating the volatile nature of his public appearances.
This incident is part of Vance's broader effort to ingratiate himself with MAGA voters, a shift from his 2016 private Facebook messages where he called Trump "a cynical asshole" and suggested the former president could become "America's Hitler." These messages surfaced during his 2022 Senate campaign, complicating his political narrative.
Vance concluded his comments by extending his cautionary advice to all clergy, stating that "whether they're Catholic or Protestant," they should ensure their theological discussions are firmly rooted in truth. This statement underscores his attempt to position himself as a voice of religious and political conservatism, even as his own past contradictions continue to surface.
