Two people have been confirmed dead following a high-rise fire in downtown Gatineau early Wednesday morning, according to first responders.

Fire Discovered in Fourth-Floor Unit

Firefighters were dispatched to a 16-storey building at the north end of Laurier Street at approximately 2 a.m. Reports indicate the fire originated in a unit on the fourth floor. Crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control.

Evacuations and Casualties

Approximately three dozen residents were evacuated from their homes as a result of the fire. Tragically, two individuals were found deceased inside the building. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
