Two people have been confirmed dead following a high-rise fire in downtown Gatineau early Wednesday morning, according to first responders.
Fire Discovered in Fourth-Floor Unit
Firefighters were dispatched to a 16-storey building at the north end of Laurier Street at approximately 2 a.m. Reports indicate the fire originated in a unit on the fourth floor. Crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control.
Evacuations and Casualties
Approximately three dozen residents were evacuated from their homes as a result of the fire. Tragically, two individuals were found deceased inside the building. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Investigation Underway
The Gatineau Police Service has taken over the investigation into the incident. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.
