Uber Adds Hotel Bookings via Expedia Partnership for Super App Push
Uber Adds Hotel Bookings via Expedia Partnership

Uber Technologies Inc. is adding hotel bookings to its flagship app through a new partnership with Expedia Group Inc., marking the ride-hailing company's most significant expansion into the travel market as it pursues its vision of becoming an all-encompassing platform.

Partnership Details

The San Francisco-based company announced the collaboration during its annual product event on Wednesday. Expedia's hotel inventory will be available within the Uber app starting in the United States, with vacation rentals from Expedia's Vrbo brand expected to be added later this year. This integration allows Uber to offer a seamless travel experience, combining rides, food delivery, and now accommodation.

Benefits for Uber One Members

Members of Uber's paid subscription program, Uber One, can earn 10% back in credits on every hotel booking made through the app. These credits can be used for future rides or delivery orders. Additionally, customers can save up to 20% on a selection of approximately 10,000 hotels. In return, Uber ride bookings will be integrated into the Expedia app starting in June, as confirmed by the travel company.

Strategic Move for Uber

Hotel bookings represent a strategic addition for Uber, as the company already facilitates many aspects of travel, including airport transportation and food delivery. According to Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal, about 15% of Uber's ride-hailing gross bookings occur to or from airports, and over 1.5 billion trips were made outside a rider's home city last year. The Expedia partnership is a key step in Uber's long-standing ambition to build a super app, expanding beyond ride-hailing and delivery into various travel and lifestyle services.

Uber has pursued this goal through partnerships, investments, and acquisitions, adding options like bike and scooter rentals, train and bus bookings, and even flight reservations in select markets. The company is not alone in this endeavor; OpenAI and Anthropic PBC are also integrating third-party features into their chatbots to become one-stop shops for consumers. Uber has made its services available on these AI platforms, but users must still open the Uber app to view prices and complete bookings, similar to the upcoming Expedia ride-booking integration.

App Enhancements and Uber One Growth

Uber is simultaneously investing in improving its own app, as most users still start their booking experience there. At the product event, Uber unveiled an updated search bar that interprets natural language and flexibly displays ride and takeout options. The company also introduced an upcoming voice booking tool powered by OpenAI, combining real-time API technology and GPT-4o models.

The hotel benefits could boost Uber One, which has over 46 million members globally and is a key cross-selling channel. Uber One members will now earn credits on international rides and can use credits earned abroad at home, further enhancing the program's value.

Impact on Expedia

For Expedia, led by former Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the partnership accelerates growth in its enterprise segment. Expedia's B2B operation, which contributed about 33% of revenue in 2025, includes licensing its API technology to corporate travel platforms like Navan Inc., and now this tie-up with Uber.
