Trump Announces ICE Nominee
President Donald Trump on Saturday announced via his Truth Social platform the nomination of Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, as the next director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Trump described Schroyer as a “PATRIOT with real operational experience, and proven leader with DECADES of experience locking up the worst of the worst.”
Background on the Nomination
The nomination follows the resignation of former ICE director Todd Lyons at the end of May. Since then, David Venturella, a former executive at a private prison operator, has served as the acting head of the agency. Schroyer’s appointment requires Senate confirmation.
DHS Secretary Mullin's Support
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin, also from Oklahoma and a former congressman, quickly praised Schroyer’s nomination on X. “With over 29 years of law enforcement experience, Lance will play a vital role in helping deliver on the President’s mandate from the American people to target, arrest, and deport illegal aliens,” Mullin wrote. Mullin is still settling into his role atop the DHS, which oversees ICE, and has promised to keep his department out of the headlines while aligning with Trump’s mass deportation priorities.
Context and Implications
Schroyer’s nomination signals a continued focus on strict immigration enforcement. Trump’s statement emphasized Schroyer’s operational background, contrasting with the acting director’s private-sector experience. The move comes as the administration pushes forward with its immigration agenda, despite Mullin’s earlier indications of a softer tone.
