A 34-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history in British Columbia and Saskatchewan has been charged following a violent vehicle rampage in Vancouver's West End that left a senior citizen critically injured and two police officers hurt.
Tadd Bali is now facing four counts of assault causing bodily harm and remains in custody, according to Vancouver Police Department Constable Darren Wong, who provided an update on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded around 5:30 a.m. on May 15, 2026, when police received reports of a driver behaving erratically near the intersection of Comox and Broughton streets. Witnesses described the suspect's vehicle plowing through the Nelson Park off-leash dog area before striking a senior citizen riding a motorized scooter.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to hospital in critical condition. As of Tuesday, their condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, Wong confirmed.
The rampage continued as the driver allegedly rammed several vehicles and drove along a sidewalk before being stopped after crashing into a police vehicle. Two Vancouver police officers were injured in the collision, including a recruit who was only on his second day of work. Both officers were treated at hospital and released later that day.
Wong noted that Bali has had extensive interactions with law enforcement in both British Columbia and Saskatchewan. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, police have suggested that mental health issues and possible drug use may have been contributing factors at the time of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
