Senator Adam Schiff Takes Hard Stance Against ICE and Border Patrol Funding
In a bold declaration on Sunday, Senator Adam Schiff (D-Ca.) stated he is "not giving ICE or Border Patrol another dime" due to the agencies' operations under the Trump administration. This announcement came during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," where Schiff addressed the political fallout from recent deadly Immigration and Custom Enforcement raids.
Government Shutdown Threat Over DHS Funding
When moderator Kristen Welker questioned Schiff about his willingness to vote against Department of Homeland Security funding, potentially leading to another government shutdown, the senator was unequivocal. "Democrats are not going to fund that," he asserted, placing the responsibility squarely on Republicans. Schiff emphasized that if a shutdown occurs, it will be a Republican decision, as they control the majority and could choose to link this funding with other government agencies.
Schiff expressed hope that some Senate Republicans might be swayed by public backlash against the raids, urging them to vote against what he termed a "continuation of violence." He warned that those who support additional funding will share responsibility for any resulting harm, including potential deaths in American cities.
Allegations of Corruption and Waste in DHS
Further into the interview, Schiff elaborated on the consequences of withholding funding, despite Republicans having passed $170 billion in extra DHS funding through the "One Big Beautiful Bill." He argued that cutting funds could prevent the situation from worsening, citing a lack of oversight and rampant misuse of resources.
"They have thrown so much money at these agencies. They don't know what to do with it," Schiff claimed, predicting that future oversight would reveal enormous waste, fraud, and abuse within DHS. He accused the agencies of operating without proper accountability, leading to what he described as money being "wasted hand over fist."
Schiff concluded by vowing not to participate in funding what he sees as a corrupt system, reinforcing his commitment to holding agencies accountable for their actions and spending practices.
