Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has indicated a willingness to consider a southern route for a potential pipeline to the West Coast, marking a shift in the province's long-standing push for northern access. Speaking at a press conference, Smith emphasized that the decision would be based on economic viability and environmental considerations.
Consultations Underway
The premier confirmed that consultations with Indigenous communities and industry stakeholders are set to begin in the coming weeks. "We need to ensure that any pipeline project respects the rights of Indigenous peoples and meets the highest environmental standards," Smith stated.
Federal Relations
Smith also addressed her relationship with the federal government, noting that signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) demonstrates her commitment to federalism. "You have to work it out," she said, highlighting the importance of collaboration.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debates over energy infrastructure in Canada, with environmental groups expressing caution and industry leaders welcoming the potential for new export capacity.
