Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Paris on Friday for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, setting the stage for discussions on trade, global security, and the situation in Ukraine ahead of the upcoming G7 leaders' summit. The two leaders shook hands as they prepared to participate in a session on Ukraine during the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, Armenia, earlier this month.
Trade and Security Talks
Carney's visit to Paris underscores Canada's commitment to strengthening ties with European allies amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The prime minister is expected to push for coordinated action on trade diversification and support for Ukraine, as well as address shared concerns about China's trade practices and technology policies. The meeting comes as Canada prepares to host the G7 summit later this year.
Ukraine Situation
The leaders discussed the latest developments in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for continued military and humanitarian assistance. Canada has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine, providing billions in aid and imposing sanctions on Russia. Macron reiterated France's solidarity with Ukraine and called for a unified European response.
Bilateral Relations
Carney and Macron also reviewed bilateral economic cooperation, including potential collaborations in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure. The two countries have a robust trade relationship, with Canada being a key supplier of natural resources and technology to France.
Following the Paris meeting, Carney is scheduled to travel to other European capitals before the G7 summit, which will focus on global economic recovery, climate change, and digital transformation.
