Multiple Buildings Collapse in Overnight Metcalfe Fire in Ottawa
Multiple Buildings Collapse in Overnight Metcalfe Fire

Ottawa firefighters successfully tamed a large fire in the rural Metcalfe community early on June 4, which led to the collapse of several buildings. The blaze, which broke out shortly after midnight, posed significant challenges due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area and the presence of hazardous materials.

Fire Details and Response

At approximately 12:45 a.m., emergency services received a 9-1-1 call reporting a large barn and potentially nearby structures on fire south of Metcalfe on Eighth Line Road. According to Ottawa Fire Services (OFS), the area is not equipped with fire hydrants, complicating firefighting efforts. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames engulfing multiple buildings, with some structures already collapsing under the intense heat.

In addition to the flames, crews had to contend with downed hydro wires and an exposed fuel tank on one of the buildings. The fire was declared under control just after 2 a.m., following a coordinated effort to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.

Post-Fire Measures

OFS deployed a dedicated fire watch truck to monitor the area for any remaining hot spots or potential flare-ups. The city has also assigned a fire services investigator to determine the cause and origin of the fire. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident highlights the unique challenges of fighting fires in rural areas, where limited water supply and isolated structures can escalate risks. The community of Metcalfe, located in south Ottawa, remains vigilant as authorities continue their work.
