"We must accelerate the buildup of our military to protect national sovereignty and security," KCNA quoted him as saying. The assembly, North Korea's rubber-stamp parliament, routinely approves major policy decisions.
Independent journalists were not granted access to the event, and the content of Kim's speech could not be independently verified. The Korean Central News Agency released a photo of Kim speaking at the podium, which was distributed via the Korea News Service.
Context of Tensions
The vow comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests in recent months, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.
